Ford Expedition Trims: Start With Active or Platinum, Then Choose by Use

Compare 2027 Ford Expedition trims, starting prices, seating, MAX cargo space and packages, with guidance for family, towing and off-road buyers.

The 2027 Ford Expedition has four trim levels: Active, Platinum, Tremor and King Ranch. Active is the practical starting point; Platinum adds everyday comfort equipment; Tremor supplies factory off-road hardware; King Ranch emphasizes its distinctive leather interior and luxury equipment. MAX is the longer body, not a higher trim, and is available with Active, Platinum and King Ranch—not Tremor. Ford’s 2027 lineup

For a family that wants eight seats and can live with cloth upholstery, start with Active. If heated and ventilated leather-trimmed front seats are priorities, compare Platinum before moving further up the range.

This guide covers U.S.-market 2027 models, using Ford’s displayed specifications and prices as of October 14, 2026.

Trim levels and starting prices

Trim Standard-length base MSRP MAX base MSRP Main reason to choose it
Active $63,920 $66,920 Eight-seat family utility at the lowest starting price
Platinum $70,870 $73,870 Leather-trimmed seating, heating/ventilation and more cabin convenience
Tremor $82,720 Not offered Standard 4WD, locking rear differential and off-road suspension
King Ranch $83,015 $86,015 Mesa Del Rio leather, upgraded audio and power-deployable running boards

These are base-vehicle MSRPs, excluding Ford’s $2,795 destination/delivery charge, options, taxes and dealer fees. Active, Platinum and King Ranch offer 4x2 or 4x4; Tremor is 4x4 only. Compare matching drivetrains and bodies before treating a trim’s advertised starting price as the cost of your preferred build. Ford pricing and drivetrain details

What each trim actually adds

Active: the useful baseline

Active includes cloth upholstery, eight-passenger seating, a manual-folding 40/20/40 second-row bench and a power-folding, power-reclining 60/40 third row. Its standard equipment also includes a 24-inch panoramic display, 13.2-inch center display, 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control with lane centering, tri-zone climate control and powered upper and lower sections of the Ford Split Gate. Active standard equipment

That makes Active worth considering before assuming you need a luxury trim for parking assistance or the large displays. Ford lists 200A as its standard equipment group and 202A as optional. ActiveX upholstery, seven-passenger seating, power-folding second-row seats and the Flex Powered Console are available rather than standard across all Active builds. Active options Price the exact equipment group and required options against Platinum—not just the Active badge.

Platinum: the comfort threshold

Platinum makes heated and ventilated leather-trimmed front seats, heated power-folding second-row captain’s chairs, a heated steering wheel, the sliding Flex Powered Console and a 10-speaker B&O system standard. It also changes the third row to a more flexible 40/20/40 split. Seven seats are standard; an eight-passenger second-row bench is optional. Platinum equipment

Its advertised base premium over Active is $6,950. That is a reasonable comparison point if you will use several of those comfort features, but it is not a universal value verdict. A lightly optioned Active may still fit your routine better.

Platinum is also where package selection becomes especially important: the base trim does not automatically include the high-output engine, massage seats or 22-speaker audio system.

Tremor: capability, not just appearance

Tremor comes with the 440-horsepower high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, Intelligent 4WD, a 3.73 electronic-locking rear differential, 33-inch all-terrain tires, higher-ride suspension with premium passive shocks, underbody protection and skid plates. Trail Control, Trail Turn Assist and Rock Crawl mode are part of its off-road equipment. Ford lists 10.6 inches of minimum running ground clearance. Tremor equipment · Ford dimensions

Choose it when your routes justify that hardware. If your main requirement is four-wheel drive for ordinary road use, also price an Active or Platinum 4x4. Tremor retains heated and ventilated front seats and heated second-row captain’s chairs, but it cannot be ordered as a MAX.

King Ranch: buy the interior and included equipment

King Ranch has Mesa Del Rio leather across the seats and selected cabin surfaces, 22-inch Sinister Bronze wheels, power-deployable running boards, 22-speaker B&O Unleashed audio and the Driver’s Package. It seats seven only. King Ranch standard equipment

Its appeal is the distinctive cabin and bundled convenience equipment, not the strongest engine: Ford lists the 400-horsepower V6 for King Ranch. The 440-horsepower engine is standard on Tremor and available on Platinum/MAX Platinum. Ford’s quoted horsepower and torque ratings are based on premium fuel. Engine specifications

Packages that can change the decision

On Platinum, separate styling upgrades from functional ones:

  • Stealth Appearance: black exterior details and 22-inch wheels. Do not confuse it with the high-output performance package.
  • Stealth Performance: the 440-horsepower engine, Driver’s Package, high-flow exhaust and 24-inch wheels, with blacked-out styling.
  • Platinum Ultimate: also includes the high-output engine and Driver’s Package, but adds luxury multi-contour front seats, its own interior treatment and 24-inch wheels.
  • Driver’s Package: available on Platinum and Tremor, standard on King Ranch. Its equipment includes 22-speaker audio, power-adjustable pedals with memory and wireless charging; check model-specific running-board and roof equipment in the build.
  • 30th Anniversary Appearance: a 2027 Platinum package with unique badging, 22-inch wheels and exclusive available Blue Ember Metallic paint—not another trim level.

These distinctions come from Ford’s package descriptions. Price the complete build, including any prerequisites. For BlueCruise, also distinguish equipped hardware from the included service period: base Platinum and Tremor list a 90-day trial, while King Ranch includes a one-year-plus-90-day plan. BlueCruise remains a supervised driver-assistance system. Platinum details · Tremor details · King Ranch details

Decide seating, body length and towing before luxury

Need eight seats? Active supplies them as standard. Platinum and Tremor require the available second-row bench. King Ranch does not offer an eight-seat configuration. Ford seating configurations

Need luggage room with every row occupied? MAX is the more relevant upgrade than a higher trim. Ford’s specification table lists 21.6 cubic feet behind the third row for the regular body and 36.1 for MAX; with the third-row seat fully upright, the figures are 22.9 and 37.4 respectively. Overall length increases from 209.9 to 221.7 inches. Check your garage and test-load your usual stroller or luggage. Ford cargo and dimensions

Need to tow a heavy trailer? Do not buy by the trim badge or horsepower alone. Ford’s 2027 towing guide lists these maximum loaded trailer weights for properly equipped configurations:

  • Standard-length 4x4 with Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, excluding 24-inch wheels: 9,600 pounds.
  • Standard-length 4x4 with that package and 24-inch wheels: 9,200 pounds—a relevant limit for Stealth Performance and Platinum Ultimate shoppers.
  • Tremor: 9,300 pounds, with the tow package standard.
  • MAX 4x4 with Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package: 9,000 pounds.
  • 4x2: 6,000 pounds for the regular body or 6,300 pounds for MAX.

Ford requires a weight-distributing hitch for loaded trailer weights over 7,000 pounds. Verify the exact configuration’s rating and available payload; passengers, cargo and trailer tongue weight all count toward vehicle limits. 2027 Ford towing guide · Tremor tow-package equipment

Shopping an older Expedition?

The 2026 lineup also uses Active, Platinum, Tremor and King Ranch, but equipment and drivetrain availability should not be inferred from this 2027 guide. Ford specifically identifies 4x2 availability on Platinum and King Ranch as a 2027 change. 2026 lineup · 2027 changes

For 2024, Ford’s order guide lists XL, XLT, Limited, Timberline, King Ranch and Platinum. The retail XL STX configuration is five-passenger only and has no third row; Timberline is the off-road entry in that older range. 2024 Ford order guide
